787 Coffee Co. boasts multiple locations scattered across New York City, New Jersey, Texas, and Puerto Rico. My recent coffee adventure led me to their Bronx establishment. Nestled in the midst of a burgeoning neighborhood, this coffee haven stands out with its unique touch – a tribute to the captivating coffee beans sourced from the island of Puerto Rico.

787 Coffee Co.’s menu brings a taste of Puerto Rico’s delectable desserts to the Bronx. From coquito to tres leches cake, the flavors transport you to the sun-soaked streets of San Juan. On my visit, I indulged in the coquito latte with oat milk, an intriguing blend that hinted at the infusion of Puerto Rican rum into the coffee beans. According to 787’s website, the beans undergo a 48-hour soak in Don Q Rum, resulting in a unique flavor profile. While the coffee didn’t quite replicate the authentic coquito taste, it was undeniably delicious. The choice between rum, tequila, and whiskey-infused beans adds a touch of novelty to the experience.

Accompanying my aromatic coffee was a baked chicken empanada, a departure from the traditional fried version. The filling lacked the expected Puerto Rican flair, but the surprising star was the dough – a delightful twist that inspired me to experiment with baking my own pastelillos at home.

As a chef, I appreciate the art of recreating culinary delights in my own kitchen. While 787 Coffee Co.’s offerings were delightful, the price tag left me hesitant to become a regular. As someone who finds satisfaction in recreating my favorite dishes and drinks at home, I’ll stick to my homemade pastelillos and budget-friendly oat milk lattes.

In conclusion, 787 Coffee Co. is still worth a visit to support a Latin owned business, in addition to investing in the Bronx as well as acknowledging and supporting the hardworking coffee farmers on the island of Puerto Rico where 787 sources their coffee beans. However, for those looking for a more budget-friendly option, there are so many other pleasant coffee shops that won’t break the bank or you can try creating the experience at home like me.
