Conventionality welcomes boredom. I’m still trying to figure out how I ended up having lunch at the Crab Shanty restaurant in City Island on New Year’s Day. That’s no place to start my year. I do love seafood, but my cultured spirit was crushed over a simple plate of fried jumbo shrimp and broiled lobster tail. City Island is a town that doesn’t draw me in. It’s a cute little place, but it’s no place I desire to be. Certain foods are so accessible in local areas; it makes no sense to take the ride out there. The restaurants are Red Lobster style and the feeling you get from them are Burger King – not quite have it your way, just very low-budget. When I got the check, I realized Crab Shanty actually isn’t low budget. The prices are Midtown all the way. When you’re spending that type of money, you want the whole shebang; all I got was a light thud. No fancy cocktails, or unique plates, no well-informed sommelier – just high school kids working to pay for prom and ready to take your order.
Peter was our waiter at the Crab Shanty. He is a very pleasant young man. His service should be recognized and celebrated. While we were celebrating Liz’s birthday with our children, it turned out to be a beautiful day. Spending time with family and friends is always a plus, but the adventurer in me seeks more fulfillment. City Island does not fulfill me. It emptied my pockets and put me to sleep – literally. I will recommend Crab Shanty for family gatherings, but if you are seeking exceptionality outside of family moments, avoid it with every step.
