As a plus size black woman who loves traveling to different islands in the Caribbean, it is hard to find stylish swimsuits and cover-ups at an affordable price. Add the fact that I live in New York City where it is impossible to find summer wear during winter months. Retailers rollout seasonal pieces making it difficult to shop for the perfect vacation outfits when traveling to the Caribbean in the middle of a New York winter.
The popular saying “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere” comes to mind behind my deciding to open a boutique that specializes in resort wear. Instead of time, I think of weather. “It’s hot somewhere.” In the middle of northeastern blizzards, there are people in the Caribbean sipping Miami Vices on the beach wearing bathing suits, flip-flops, and sun hats. There are people who travel to small islands with warm weather to escape the blistering cold felt in large cities during winter months.
Social media has shown me that there are a lot of plus size female travelers who flock to the warmest islands where the sand is white and the water is blue. I want to cater to those women. My boutique is slowly evolving and finding its place in the market. I started out with just sunglasses. We now have beach cover-ups and will soon add dresses and swimsuits to the boutique.
Being able to help women look and feel their best while on vacation is a dream come true for me because I know how good it feels when you use your limited PTO days to just sit under the sun. You can finally be free! We express ourselves through our style, so I feel honored when I can inspire a woman to show off her freedom on a tropical island in a piece from my online boutique www.shopmissmj.com.
