This is a developing story. Here’s what we know so far:
Gavin Scott Hapgood, a UBS Financial Adviser, was arrested on a Manslaughter charge in Anguilla while vacationing with his family.
Reports state that Hapgood phoned the resort’s front desk and specifically requested Kenny Mitchel who was a maintenance worker employed by the resort. When Mitchel arrived to the room, a fight ensued leaving Mitchel dead at the scene. IT IS STILL UNCLEAR WHAT PROMPTED THE FIGHT. Based on my research, it appears that there wasn’t much of a fight. Hapgood maintained the upper-hand and brutally murdered Mitchel.
Mitchel’s death certificate states his death was due to prone restraint, positional asphyxiation, and blunt force trauma to the head, neck, and torso.
Witnesses state that Hapgood would not release Mitchel from a deadly hold even after hotel security arrived to the scene. Hapgood waited until Mitchel had expired before releasing him from the hold.
Hapgood, allegedly, hired private security for him and his family and checked-in to a different 5 star resort in Anguilla.
Hapgood was finally taken into custody and charged with Manslaughter. Although he was denied bail by Anguilla’s Magistrate Court, reports state he was later granted bail in the amount of EC $200,000 ( US $74,000).
Hapgood was allowed to leave the island of Anguilla. Cellphone video surfaced of Hapgood boarding a private jet and leaving the island.
Mitchel’s family and friends want answers and justice!
